Our Academic Programme

The academic programme allows students to gain knowledge, skills and understanding of a wide range of curriculum subject areas. A strong academic education is a fundamental part of a student’s journey through our school as it provides a foundation for further study, as well as an understanding of key aspects of our daily lives.

Our Academic Results

St Christopher’s is always very proud of the consistent efforts and dedication shown by all our students, not only academically, but to all aspects of student life.

Our results are a product of high teaching standards; a very supportive parent body; and an excellent attitude from our students – many of whom have gone on to top Universities and Colleges in the UK, USA and around the world.

The Examinations Office is responsible for all aspects of the examination process on behalf of the various Examination Boards in the United Kingdom. St Christopher’s School is currently registered to conduct examinations through various Boards, but predominantly utilises the services of AQA, CIE and Edexcel.

Our Learning Philosophy

At St Christopher’s Bahrain, we believe that learning happens through the design of purposeful activities that engender joy, foster curiosity and challenge students who are conscious of how they learn.

Our learning will promote intellectual rigour, social responsibility and personal wellbeing. These three strands thread their way through our curriculum. The intellectual not only encompasses the academic curriculum but brings a focus to intellectual pursuits that will fire the synapses and bring critical thought to each and every situation.

The social aspect of our curriculum is constructed around the School’s Social Responsibility (SSR) and uses the UN Development Goals to scaffold our work. Wellbeing refers to the healthy mind and body of all people within all St Christopher’s community and encompasses the UN Rights of a Child.

“Learning to Engage, Engaging to Learn’ encapsulates how we think about learning at St Christopher’s.”

Expanding further on our philosophy of learning are our Foundations for Learning, adapted from the ideas described in a UNESCO report by Jacques Delors, which, in turn, is complemented by the concepts of ‘Autonomous Learners’ and ‘Global Citizens’.

Our curriculum along with our Foundations of Learning help direct our enthusiasm and ensure students are:

  • Intellectually rigorous with the independence of thought.
  • Engaged in the world with an insatiable sense of curiosity.
  • Confident to be a unique individual, while respecting differences in others.
  • Ambitious with the skills and social-conscience to succeed in life.

The St Christopher's Infant School

Welcome to St Christopher’s Infant School. We are very proud to be a British School in Bahrain, educating children from over 75 different nationalities to become ‘Role Models for the World’.

We believe our role in the Infant School is to instil in our children a deep love of learning and equip them with a solid foundation of essential skills. Our British-based curriculum is rich and varied, using a play-based approach to inspire and engage our children to be creative, explore ideas and think critically.

Our wonderful children experience a nurturing and stimulating environment, where our school mission of ‘Education for a Shared Humanity’ is central to our provision. We believe we are one family and that we help one another to be safe, be kind, be respectful and be responsible – our four Infant Golden Rules. We teach children to be responsible for themselves, fostering independence, and to take responsibility on a wider scale, such as tackling environmental issues.

Every week there is something exciting happening in our School: from Victorian Day to Global Citizen Day; from dinosaur hunting in our ‘VR’ goggles to performing in one of our many cantatas – all of which contribute to making our school a very special place in which to learn.

We are fortunate to have World Class facilities in which to learn and play and our strive for continuous improvement means that we are always looking at ways of improving the learning experience for the children, whether through research-based practice, implementation of innovative teaching methods or the enhancement of our physical resources. We are a forward-thinking school which does not ‘sit still’.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have, we look forward to welcoming you into our St Chris family.

Infant Curriculum

At St Christopher’s, we believe that a curriculum should be exciting, varied and stimulating in order to meet the needs of children of all abilities. Innovative teaching methods, daily challenges and homework are all geared towards encouraging the children to work in an independent way.

We lay the strongest foundations for the total development of each individual through a nurturing and child-centred approach. This is achieved through creative and integrated learning opportunities in a stimulating environment where children feel valued, confident and independent. All this is underpinned by our commitment to supporting every child’s :

  • Social
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • And Cultural Awareness.

In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils work predominantly with their class teacher and receive specialist teaching in native or non-native Arabic, Music and PE, enjoying swimming as part of the curriculum. All the classes have timetabled lessons in a fully equipped ICT suite and also have a bank of Chromebooks that we use to enhance curriculum learning within the classroom.

At Nursery pupils learn through a play-based, thematic approach, utilising a range of interesting and creative teaching methods. They have the freedom to explore, investigate, discover, imagine, and to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding through self-chosen activities and adult-led experiences. Our Nursery is bright and spacious with cosy classrooms and exciting corners in which to play and learn. Our pupils benefit from a stimulating, integrated indoor-outdoor environment, which promotes a child’s independence, decision-making and problem-solving.

The curriculum in our Nursery is based around the seven areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):

  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Early phonics skills are developed through fun activities and pupils are introduced to pre-reading skills. Early number concepts are developed through Numicon, which builds a deep understanding of number and number relationships, developing pupils’ fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.

In Reception, we seek to develop a child’s potential through a stimulating, multi-sensory, broad and balanced curriculum, delivered in a secure, caring and creative environment.

The formal teaching of reading continues with a highly-structured phonics programme and the Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme which further develops early reading skills taught in Nursery.

Creative and critical thinking is encouraged by putting forward and developing the pupil’s own ideas and strategies. And We encourage our pupils to learn actively and to concentrate and persevere when they encounter difficulties, thereby enjoying their achievements and endeavours.

Our learners enjoy a sense of personal achievement, which is celebrated by all. The curriculum taught in Year 1 is challenging and differentiated to ensure all pupils are engaged and work hard, yet have fun. We regard the acquisition of the core skills of reading, writing and maths essential and plan the teaching programme carefully for continuity and progression. Year 1 provides a well-planned and resourced curriculum which takes each child’s learning forward through a continuous provision approach.

The core curriculum subjects of English and Maths receive the greatest time commitment and the pupils experience learning in foundation subjects through a themed approach where they can see explicit links to the different subject areas.

We regard the acquisition of the core skills of reading, writing and maths essential and plan the teaching programme carefully for continuity and progression. Year 1 provides a well-planned and resourced curriculum which takes each child’s learning forward through a continuous provision approach.

In Year 2, we build on the enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning fostered in the earlier Infant School years.  Our curriculum takes the best elements of traditional teaching but is not restricted by it. Technology and careful planning encourages an imaginative approach to teaching and learning in all subject areas.

As the oldest pupils in the Infant School, our Year 2 pupils have special privileges and responsibilities. Over the year, four pupils from each of our Year 2 classes are elected to the Infant School Student Council

The St Christopher's Junior School

Welcome to St Christopher’s Junior School. As parents, we want our children to grow up to be happy and successful and at St Christopher’s we share this aspiration.

Our passionate and dedicated teachers are looking forward to forming a positive partnership with you and your child to ensure they attain the highest possible standards academically and to support them with every aspect of their continuous learning journey. We provide excellent pastoral care, set high expectations and insist on exemplary behaviour to create an environment that facilitates success.

We aim for our pupils to be ‘Role Models for the World’ who are well prepared to make a positive contribution, both in school and beyond.
St Christopher’s mission to provide ‘Education for a Shared Humanity’ permeates through all that we do in the Junior School. We acknowledge that every child is different and we are proud of the way our children learn harmoniously in the fabulous classrooms and facilities we have. We take every opportunity to recognise, celebrate and share success and, in addition to attaining high academic standards, we nurture outstanding musicians, actors and athletes who have many opportunities to perform and compete in Bahrain and beyond.

We know that children learn best when they are engaged and enjoying their learning. At St Christopher’s, children experience varied opportunities to immerse themselves in their learning through theme days, trips and visits and input from visiting speakers. Service is a key part of life at St Christopher’s with all children involved in service projects and we love to support children’s own ideas for how to help those in need.

We encourage you to visit our school to see our young people engaged in their learning where I know you will not fail to be impressed by their focus and confidence and if you have any questions feel free to contact us!

Junior Curriculum

As children progress through Junior School, the emphasis is placed on the further acquisition of skills and understanding in all curriculum areas.

Our creative and integrated curriculum is underpinned by a structured approach to teaching the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and ICT and a commitment to high standards. Cross-curricular links are made, where appropriate, to make the learning meaningful and relevant.

We hold true to the overarching principles of the English National Curriculum which provides a framework for our key teaching and learning intentions, we firmly believe that equipping our young 21st-century learners with the relevant skills and knowledge.

ARABIC STUDIES : Arabic is one of the oldest existing and most widely spoken languages in the world and is ranked among the top six of the world’s major languages. At St Christopher’s School, we are proud of our Arabic language programme for both native and non-native speakers as it gives all pupils an opportunity to communicate in our host nation’s language. We follow the Bahraini Government Curriculum with a curriculum that focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening. The curriculum is enhanced through units of work linked to learning about Bahrain and Arabic Heritage and Culture.

We celebrate Arabic language and culture on many different occasions such as the Bahrain National Day, Eid al Adha and an Arabic Reading and Writing Week which helps develop the skills needed to communicate effectively and give pupils a chance to enjoy learning and broaden their language.

ISLAMIC STUDIES  : The cornerstone of the education for pupils at St Christopher’s School is the formation of their Islamic faith. The focus of the Islamic Studies curriculum is to familiarise the pupils with Islamic beliefs and practices and to enhance their understanding of the practical dimension of their faith. The approach we use is designed to instil a love for Allah SWT and an appreciation of the Prophetic example.

At St Christopher’s we use the Bahrain Ministry of Education curriculum of Islamic Studies for Arabs. For non-Arab students, the school uses the Islamic Good Word course which is specifically designed for non-Arab Muslim pupils. As students progress from one grade level to the other, they learn how to practice the basic rituals of worship, Ibadat, and the Articles of Faith. They learn important parts of the life of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) and recognise his significance to Muslims and the world. They learn about the lives of other prophets and analyse their stories for important lessons.

Our Art curriculum in Years 1 to 6 follows the Art Programmes of Study in the National Curriculum for England 2014. This ensures that all pupils have ample opportunities to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences in a variety of media. Pupils become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.

The curriculum is enhanced by exploring the work of famous artists, Arabic art and through opportunities to visit local artists at work. All pupils contribute to collaborative pieces of artwork which are now displayed throughout the school.

Design and Technology (DT) at St Christopher’s is an inspiring practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable.

DT is taught by the pupil’s class teacher in Nursery to Year 3. DT in Years 4, 5 and 6 is taught by a specialist DT teacher in our purpose-built DT classroom or Food Technology kitchen for 1 hour each week. In Year 6 children get to compete in the Master Chef competition where they work in small groups planning and making their own 2-course meal. Our specialist DT classroom is resourced with state of the art equipment, such as a 3d printers, vacuum former, belt sander, pillar drill as well as standard resistant materials tools and sewing machines for textile projects.

Our DT curriculum in Nursery and Reception follows the Expressive Arts and Design guidance in the Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. This involves children being able to safely explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques. In Years 1 to 6 follows the DT Programmes of Study in the National Curriculum for England 2014. This ensures that all pupils have ample opportunities to design, make and evaluate projects.

Drama is an integral part of students’ life at St Christopher’s School. We cherish the enthusiasm and commitment of our students and teachers display in every aspect of their involvement in Drama, throughout the school. From the amazing Year group Cantatas which celebrate the wonderful learning; the exciting theatre trips to the Bahrain Cultural Hall and the visiting theatre companies that perform educational shows.

At St Christopher’s, the Year 5 and 6 children produce a spectacular show at the end of the academic year. A true celebration of team-work; one where actors, singers and dancers get to display their talents.

English at primary school level is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world. If children lack vital literacy skills they can be held back at every stage of their life. At St Chris, we aim to equip our pupils with the best English skills, attitudes and habits, in order for them to reach their future goals.

We do this through the teaching of a number of different ‘strands’

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking and listening

Excellent reading skills underpin everything we do at school. Being able to read well not only enables pupils to discover new facts and to learn but also opens them up to a world of new ideas, stories and opportunities. As they experience high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from reading and discussing a range of stories, poems and non-fiction, they build a love of reading which will stay with them throughout their lives.

Learning to write is one of the most important things that a child at primary school will do. Pupils are immersed in a rich environment and are taught via exciting, thought-provoking topics. They use their writing in almost all other subjects of the curriculum and are aware that good writing will give them a voice to share their ideas with the world.

Developing the skills needed to communicate effectively is essential for success in life, and pupils develop them during their time at St Chris in a variety of ways. These include show and tell sessions, reading their own work out to the class, reciting poetry and presenting project work. Older pupils will also harness the power of research and critical thinking in order to participate in debating sessions.

Evidence suggests that learning a foreign language can improve listening and writing skills, boost creativity and sharpen the mind. It can broaden horizons and open doors to all sorts of opportunities, providing an opening to other cultures. At St Christopher’s we believe that a high-quality language education fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

We also think that studying a second language supports children’s general literacy and oracy, by raising awareness of their own language and thereby enriching their understanding of both. Our teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. French is introduced in Year 4 and taught by a native French-speaking specialist teacher for 1 hour each week.

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart. – Nelson Mandela

The French curriculum is based on the British National curriculum programme of study for MFL and target also to encourage pupils to sit the Delf exams. Children in Year 5 and Year 6 are given the opportunity to extend their language skills through Delf Prim exams which are a series of certificates awarded by the French Ministry of Education for proficiency in French as a foreign language.

The emphasis is on communication in a fun and stimulating learning environment. French lessons include songs, games, role-play, learning about French culture, writing projects, and activities online. The French curriculum is enhanced through activities such as French Assemblies.

Taught by their class teacher, humanities units are taught in 1 hour weekly lessons in KS1, and 90 minutes lessons in KS2. Geography and History units of work rotate throughout the year. Trips around the island also enhance the curriculum.

GEOGRAPHY : Pupils in Geography learn about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

Our Geography curriculum in Nursery and Reception follows the Understanding the World guidance in the Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. This involves children being able to make sense of their community through opportunities to find out about people, places and the environment.

In KS1 and KS2 follows the Geography Programmes of Study in the English National Curriculum. This ensures that all pupils have knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

All year groups at St Christopher’s undertake a unit of work based around a local study in Bahrain. Pupils extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Europe, North and South America. This includes the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features.

Geography has close links with whole school Global Citizenship projects and aims to empower pupils to lead their own activities and to give them the necessary skills, ability and confidence to be pro-active in making a positive difference in the world.

HISTORY : During historical units of study, pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, including Bahrain. History is taught by the pupil’s class teacher.

Our History curriculum in Nursery and Reception follows the Understanding the World guidance in the Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. This involves children being able to talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. Our youngest historians develop an early understanding of chronology.

In KS1 and KS2 follows the History Programmes of Study in the English National Curriculum. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

All year groups in Years 1 – 6 have a themed day which reinforces historical concepts learned, bringing them to life. For Year 1 pupils this is a realistic enactment of life for a Victorian schoolboy or girl, for Year 3s a Roman battle and for Year 5s a Tudor banquet.

Our Junior School students receive high-quality computing education, preparing them to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Each year group follows a bespoke ICT curriculum based on the UK National Curriculum for Computer Science. We actively encourage our pupils to become responsible, independent IT users and endeavour to ensure our wider curriculum incorporates elements of computer technology.

The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

ICT is taught by the pupil’s class teacher in Nursery to Year 3 and a specialist ICT teacher takes classes from Y4-Y6 . We are an extremely well-resourced school in which each class has an interactive capability through an interactive Whiteboard. In addition to this, we have three IT laboratories containing 26 PCs each and sets of laptops and Chromebooks which are available for booking The use of mobile technology is high on our agenda and all students from Y2- Y6 are required to bring their own iPad to school. Our teachers are all skilled users of IT and are always keen to learn more.

We believe strongly in the development of Information Technology (IT) as a means of preparing our pupils for a rapidly changing world in which technology plays a central part.

At St Christopher’s we strive to create a love of maths through a variety of teaching and learning strategies and approaches. We nurture mathematical independence, allowing time for thinking and encouraging discussion using reasoning and problem-solving skills. Children are willful participants in their learning, with innovative and imaginative resources, including practical activities and the outdoor environment.

Playing fun games and singing catchy tunes are all part and parcel of maths lessons at St Christopher’s.
Students welcome the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of maths – discovering patterns, justifying their thinking, proving what works and doesn’t and relating ideas to real life.

We promote the mastery of maths through a series of key questions:

  • Can they explain it?
  • Can they draw it?
  • Can they show it in different ways?
  • Can they teach it?

We also recognise the importance of formal mathematical understanding through written calculation methods establishing a clear progression of recording techniques. Yet, we are open to new methods and are constantly researching ideas to develop our practice so children can deepen their learning and understanding.

Think you know your times tables facts? Then take on our leading TTRockstars who need under half a second to rattle off an answer. This forms one part of our mental maths strategy to help children be mentally agile and enthused about number facts.

The Music Curriculum inspires our students to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians. Pupils participate in a range of musical activities, which include singing, composing, listening and performing. Musicianship skills are taught through songs and games and are central to our music programme.

Throughout EYFs and KS1 and KS2 our pupils explore playing instruments ranging from classroom:

  • Percussion
  • Ocarina
  • Recorder
  • Ukulele
  • Keyboard
  • Indonesian Gamelan
  • Djembe Drums

There are opportunities for pupils to join music taster clubs, choirs and orchestras and take part in our music performances which are legendary. As well as this parents can also choose to pay for one-to-one tuition in an instrument of their child’s choice.

The Physical Education curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. There are many PE opportunities at St Christopher’s that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. The PE curriculum is tailored to improve psychological health, for helping to nurture social and moral development – as well as supporting cognitive and academic performance.

We are a sport for all department and as such any pupil that trials for one of the core sports will be able to access that club for free for the whole year. There will also be the opportunity to attend many sporting competitions both at home and abroad.

The pupil’s class teacher in Nursery and a team of specialist PE teachers and Swim Coaches in Years 1 to 6 teach PE Lessons. PE is taught for two 30 minute sessions in Reception, and 1 hour a week in Years 1 and 2. Years 3 to 6 have 2 hours of PE each week. Reception to Year 2 curriculum swimming lessons last for 30 minutes and take place every week throughout the school year.

PE Facilities : At St Christopher’s School all pupils have access to superb facilities that include two sports halls, a 25m indoor swimming pool with an attached training pool, a full-size 4G turf football and hockey pitch, two netball courts, four basketball courts and three multi-purpose sports rooms.

All children of the Muslim faith attend weekly Islam lessons and Islamic assemblies arranged by the Arabic department. All other children (Year 1 to Year 6) take multi-faith RE lessons which aim to introduce children to the practices of the major religions. It also seeks to encourage children to develop a sense of identity and to treat others with respect.

The multi-faith RE lessons aim to create an understanding of religious concepts at a level appropriate to the age of the pupil being taught, looking at the key areas of beliefs and values, worship and symbols, festivals and celebrations, world religion, origins and founders, sacred texts, mystery and meaning, and people of faith.

At St Christopher’s, we do not seek to impose religious beliefs on children, nor compromise the integrity of their own beliefs by promoting one religion over another. Our programme is designed to promote understanding and tolerance through a balanced education.

Primary Science at St Christopher’s aims to ensure that all pupils develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through fun and exciting practical investigations. Most of what we know about how the world works were discovered, not by sitting in a chair and thinking hard, but by getting hands-on: pulling things apart, putting them back together, and testing out ideas. Practical science is all about ‘learning by doing’.

St Christopher’s pupils achieve a deeper level of understanding by finding things out for themselves, and by experimenting with techniques and methods that have enabled the secrets of our bodies, our environment, and the whole universe – to be discovered. Science is taught by the pupil’s class teacher in Nursery to Year 6. Science in Nursery and Reception is taught through a cross-curricular topic themed approach. All year groups have the opportunity to use our purpose-built, well-equipped science laboratories.

The St Christopher's Senior School

Welcome to St Christopher’s Senior School. Our students come from a wide range of cultures and nationalities, reflecting Bahrain’s cosmopolitan society; they form a delightful open, friendly and talented student body.

The Senior School provides students with a genuinely welcoming start to secondary education. The special atmosphere and style of the Senior School is difficult to define but is ever-present: academic certainly, but thoughtful and sensitive; competitive but good-humoured; capable of inspiring passion and skill in the arts; with a certain independence of spirit but set in a strong sense of community.

Our vision is for our students to be young people who have a strong set of values, who are well prepared to move to the next stage of their education and who will make a difference to the world in which they live. Academically, our students attain very high standards at all ages. However, success is measured not only in academic achievement, but also in terms of growth in maturity, the development of social awareness, self-discipline and motivation, and a respect for the individual.

We offer an extensive extra-curricular programme in which we encourage all students to participate, with a large number of overseas trips on offer. The school promotes an environment in which it is considered natural to help and support others within the school, and to give service to the wider community, both locally and internationally in keeping with our mission “Education for a Shared Humanity”; this permeates life at St Chris.

The school is proud of its caring ethos, with a wide range of staff involved in the pastoral care and guidance of students. We enjoy an excellent record of helping young people from very different backgrounds adjust to life at St Chris and Bahrain

The special atmosphere of the Senior School is not easy to describe – my advice to you is to visit us and experience it for yourself. We are very proud of our school and will be delighted to show you around.

Yasmine Dannawy
Head of Senior School

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 we understand that the move from the Junior School to the Senior School can be a daunting one, where students will go from being the oldest to the youngest.

Students will switch from a single class teacher in one familiar room to upwards of 12-13 specialist teachers in as many rooms. Students are immersed in a campus rich in cultural diversity with other young people from all religions and nationalities.

We have high expectations of all our students here at St. Christopher’s, not just in KS3, and there will be many opportunities presented to students, both academic and extra-curricular.

Whilst we expect students to show commitment and dedication to their academic studies, there are also a whole host of activities and clubs that they can join and opportunities, and we encourage all our students to sign up and make lots of new friends. Students may also choose to become involved in some of our many Community Service projects which allow us to help others, locally and globally.

Transitions from Year 6 to Year 7

To assist with the transition and to help to ease any anxieties, we arrange a number of transition events:

  • Year 6 Parent’s Coffee Mornings.
  • Year 6 Induction Day – all Year 6 pupils spend the day at the Senior School.
  • Transition Afternoon – parents and children visit the Senior School for a presentation.
  • Senior School staff lead assemblies for Year 6.
  • Current Year 7 students and Senior School staff visit Year 6 classes to answer questions.
  • Year 6 staff meet Head of Year 7.
  • Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to make requests to be grouped with friends in Year 7.
  • New Student Information Booklet issued to all pupils / parents in Year 6.
  • Year 10 Buddies act as guides and mentors for new Year 7 students.
  • At the start of Year 7, all students leave lessons early for lunch.

GCSEs

GCSEs, and the transition from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4, are a very important phase in education. Students in Key Stage 3 have followed a core curriculum, which has contained very little element of choice.

Students in Key Stage 4 continue to follow a core curriculum, which provides a broad and balanced education but are also able to choose to study a number of subjects in addition to the core.

In Year 10, students may be following either GCSE or IGCSE courses and there is the option to study subjects not previously taught in Key Stage 3 such as Economics and Business Studies.

Sixth Form - A Levels, BTEC and IB Diploma

The last two years of secondary education are arguably the most crucial. Our Sixth Form provides a stimulating and supportive environment in which students are encouraged to develop their own unique identities and become independent, resilient and mature young adults.

Being part of such a multicultural community is one of the many reasons why St Christopher’s Sixth Form provides such a fantastic foundation for their student’s futures.

” We were privileged enough to have experienced the warmth and diversity St Christopher’s Sixth Form has to offer, and feel confident that everyone else who has the opportunity to do so will develop into self-assured, compassionate and unique individuals, excited and prepared for their futures beyond St Christopher’s  – Head Boy & Girl. “

The Sixth Form at St Christopher’s is a diverse community with many different attributes and interests. We value all of our individual students and have a number of different routes for Post-16 study.

Sixth Form students are encouraged to engage in community service and in charity work; they assume leadership responsibilities in school as Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl or as part of the wider Student Leadership Team.

Sixth Form Curriculum

The entry requirement for our Sixth Form at St Christopher’s is a minimum of five grades of 4 or above at GCSE (or equivalent). It is expected that you will have attained grade 4 or above in Mathematics and English (or equivalent) as these will be required for entry to most universities. There are specific entry requirements for a number of subjects at A level and IB. Sixth Form students study 3 or 4 Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level subjects in Year 12.

POST 16 STUDY ROUTES :

  • A-Levels
  • The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
  • BTEC courses, either stand-alone or in combination with A-Levels

The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

IB Diploma students are required to study six subjects (one taken from each of the groups). Of the six subjects, at least three must be taken at Higher Level (HL) and a maximum of three at Standard Level (SL). In addition to this, students follow a course in Theory of Knowledge, submit the Extended Essay and take part in the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) programme.

St Christopher’s has successfully offered the IB Diploma programme to Sixth Form students since 2008. The broad range of subjects and philosophy of the IB Diploma make it highly effective preparation for university study.

Parents At St Christopher's School Say :

Hello, my name is Ruth, I have two daughters aged 7 and 10 at St Chris. We arrived in Bahrain 3 years ago. We were really pleased when the girls were accepted by St Christopher’s School as it had a very good reputation in the region. We were used to a small, international school so St Chris was a little overwhelming at first. In particular, we had to get up to sped with the various requirements for homework and topic days, however the teachers made us welcome and the girls soon settled in. Without really knowing what the role involved, I agreed to be Class Mum. In hindsight, this helped me to make friends and get to know the routines of the school.

There are lots of opportunities for parent volunteers to help in the school and this reflects the open and community feel of the school. Over the last 3 years I have seen the girls grow and develop intellectually and socially. The numerous opportunities offered by the school have engaged them both in life at St Chris in different ways.

For example, my eldest daughter asked if she could have cello lessons, we were a little bit surprised not being a very musical family. She has now passed examinations, participated in Music Festivals and Competitions and has developed the confidence to perform in front of friends, family and judges. My younger daughter was particularly proud of her selection by her peers to the position of Student Councilor. She loved undertaking this role and took her special meetings to discuss changes at the school very seriously.

This helped her understand about the need to represent her class properly and workings of the school from a different perspective. Both girls are very keen swimmers and being in the School Squad makes them feel part of a special team. Training is well organised and there are a lots of opportunities to attend competitions in Bahrain or by travelling with the school in the Middle East. It is not just medals that are recognized, personal best performances are also celebrated on a regular basis. Our children have embraced the academic challenges of St Chris and we feel that they are working to high standards. We are kept informed of progress regularly and can approach the teaching team as necessary.

– Ruth Kenna

Hi, my name is Evelyn Robb and I have 2 sons (Year 1 and Year 3) studying at St Christopher’s School. I had known about the school through internet (before we actually moved to Bahrain four years ago).

After reading the information on its website, I decided that St Christopher’s School is where I would register my boys. I remembered after my husband had taken my elder son for his assessment, he was so impressed with the school and only had positive things to say about it, be it the little things displayed along the activity corridor, the children’s playground, the equipment and the conducive learning environment.

These years at St Chris, I have seen both my boys growing into confident learners. They are not afraid of taking on a challenge to do a task. They are also enjoying themselves at school.

St Chris has made learning a fun thing, with all the different theme days and interesting and educational excursions to look forward to throughout the academic year. Not only are my boys taking pleasure being a student at St Chris, I’m too, having a great time being an active parent volunteer of the school.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking photographs for the Infant School for various events such as the swimming galas, sports days and school trips to the supermarket, the fort, Al Areen wildlife park and the fire station. It is also a joy to read with the children in the morning, doing art and craft, and even cooking with the little ones. Being a parent at St Chis can be busy yet fun.

– Evelyn Robb

Hi there. My name is Jane and I’m the proud ‘Parent’ of two lovely girls, Emilia (11 years old) and Sophia (7 years old). I have been in Bahrain since 1996, so once I had the children, it was almost inevitable they would go to St Christopher’s School. However, I could never have known then how lucky my children and I were going to be.

We are now a part of a prolific and supportive community that gives my daughters a strong, secure and happy foundation at the beginning of their lives. Although St Chris is a very large school it maintains its intimacy and unity very well.

The friendliness of parents, teachers and children make this happen. All my children’s teachers have been superb .

From Mrs Ingham, who gave her heart and soul to prepare Emilia for, not only that year, but, as she said “I hope that what I teach her she can use now and for always” Preparing Emilia for life, like a parent or grandparent.
What mother could wish for more? Mr V’s wonderful sense of humor and care, made learning, for Emilia, a joy and school a great place to be. She ran (or meandered with enthusiasm!) into school growing with confidence and a belief in herself as everyday passed.

Many times Mr V also had me in fits of laughter!! Teachers with skills like this build good connections between staff, pupils and parents. Mr Tonks with his wisdom and insight into education was a pleasure to learn from, for myself, as well as my child! He could develop and implement learning techniques tailored for the individual’s needs.

All of the teachers my girls have had, have their own special skills that have made their school life happy and fulfilled. Over the years we have considered leaving Bahrain, but I can put my hand on my heart and say the reason we stay is because of St Chris. We love seeing our children happy learning and growing up in a school and surrounded by a community that would be hard to replace.

– Jane Davies

Hello my name is Ritu and my daughter Shria is aged 4 and is in Reception. She joined St Christopher’s in Nursery. We are glad that the school has been able to mould her into an increasingly independent, and more confident person as a whole during this tenure. Her command of the English language has become more precise. Thanks to SPARTA, she has become more actively involved in tennis and swimming.

We also appreciate the effort taken to conduct special events such as Global Citizens Day, police community visits, and plays to bring out the best in every child! We are proud that we belong to a school so fine and strong.

– Ritu Prasnath

Hi, my name is Gisele and we moved to Bahrain last year from Brazil. To prepare my daughter for the application assessments I sent her to an intensive English course and it was good enough for her to pass to all three schools we applied for.

She CHOSE St Chris, saying : ”This is where I wanna go to school, Mom”. It’s like she felt it was the right one for her. And it really was! We were very concerned in the beginning; new school, no friends, another language. But everybody at St Chris helped her in so many ways! Her teachers were great, they had patience with her, gave her support and time and all her classmates too.

St Chris teaches its students to be cooperative and work in groups which was fantastic! In a short time she had a lot of friends and now she’s teaching me English because she is speaking better than me!

The environment that the school offers to the children allows them to develop their unique talents, not only the curriculum subjects but also music, sports, charity, and sense of justice and responsibility.

I can tell you that in this past year my daughter grew a lot as a person and I’m very proud of her success. I know now that she really did choose the best school.

– Gisele Amaral

Hello, my name is Eva and this is our 5th year at school, with our youngest daughter now in Year 5. St Chris is a very lively school with dedicated and inspiring teachers and staff.

Over the years, our daughters have been proud to be part of great musicals and plays, orchestra and concerts, woodwind group, swim galas and sport events, school council, cooking and art competitions, the school newspaper, French Delf, Charity football matches, ‘Here to help’, the list goes on!

On top of this, the children have a constant flow of events to look forward to, with parents helping to organise the Festive Fayre, International Day, Bahrain Heritage Day, Charity bake sales, History days etc…It is no wonder that our daughter wakes up happy to go to school every morning.

– Eva Lorijn

My name is Grace and our family moved to Bahrain from the US. My children, ages 7 and 10, have just started their fourth school year at St Christopher’s. During these intervening years they have steadily matured academically, artistically and athletically, this is largely a result of the quality of education that they receive at St Christopher’s.

The heart of any academic institution is the teaching staff, and I find that overwhelmingly, St Chris teachers are well experienced, approachable, creative and passionate about their work.

One of my children has needed some additional help in an area of study, and the Learning Support department has been so helpful and proactive in assessing his needs, drawing up an individualised plan and working closely with him to ensure progress.

I am also impressed by St Christopher’s robust music, arts and athletic departments. There are so many opportunities for a student to find his or her passions beyond the academic world.

I believe that the strongest indicator of a school’s success lies in the students themselves. My children are certainly content and thriving at St Christopher’s and furthermore they feel a sense of pride and identity with their school.

– Grace Markley

As a proud alumna of St Christopher’s and now, most importantly, a parent of St Chris, I can say with full confidence that this is the best school in Bahrain. The quality of education and pastoral care is unmatched.

The facilities and extracurricular activities on offer allow students to explore their passions and interests in addition to excelling in academia.

St Chris has been recognised as one of the Top 100 Schools in the world – a well deserved award. If you are looking for a world-class international school for your child, where the teachers and staff are committed to your child’s wellbeing and education, St Christopher’s School, Bahrain is your only answer.

– Ms Razan – Alumna and Parent of St Christopher’s School

This is an outstanding school for the British curriculum.  My children are very happy here and they’ve done a great job in dealing with the safety precautions around the pandemic currently going on. – St Chris Parents

I went to this school in the mid 1980’s when the new school building had just been built. I had a great time here, very fond memories.  I loved the multiculturalism of the place, made some great friends and the education was good too! – St Chris Parents

Each of our sessions has a learning focus and these include sessions focused on physical development, creativity, musical skills, sensory exploration, story telling, communication and language development, and immersion in Arabic.
