Meet The School Leadership Team

May I extend my warmest welcome to the British School of Bahrain. I am incredibly proud to be the Executive Headmaster of such a prestigious and award-winning school. While BSB occupies a beautiful modern campus in the ever-developing area of Hamala, it is the students, staff and parents that make this school what it is. Our school in Bahrain was founded on an ethos of a caring, supportive and fun environment that nurtures every child. Many years have passed since the school’s inception, but this ethos remains strong. It is this that drew me to the School and the aspect of our school that I relish every day. It is also what draws so many parents to choose BSB over all other schools within the region. BSB is renowned as the British school of choice within Bahrain, and entry is actively sought by discerning parents.

BSB students are a delight – they are hardworking, inquisitive, caring and imaginative. We aspire to develop happy, well-rounded, confident students through our supportive pastoral environment. With over 90 nationalities, we are a truly international school, and our value of individuality is evident in our inclusive atmosphere that respects every person.

The School is renowned for its innovative teaching, its use of technology and its culture of academic enrichment that culminates in the exciting Beyond BSB programme. Our students graduate to some of the world’s best universities, equipped with both the knowledge and skills that will enable them to be leaders in their chosen careers. I look forward to welcoming you to our campus, where you can meet some students and talk to our staff. We are incredibly proud of our relationship with our parents, and this often begins with a school tour.

The BSB Campus

The BSB Infant School - Kindergarten

Welcome to the British School of Bahrain’s Infant school. Our community of teachers, parents, children and support staff includes people from a very wide range of backgrounds and nationalities. A sense of mutual respect and warmth is fundamentally important to us at all levels.

Academically, children are very much treated as individuals, with their own strengths, weaknesses and quirks. They are encouraged to do their “very best” in everything they undertake. We have found that our high challenge/low stress environment tends to bring the best out in our pupils.

Although we take teaching and learning very seriously indeed, we are in no doubt that a sense of humour is a vital ingredient in any infant school. Teachers are approachable and genuinely interested in children. It would be rare to see any teacher or assistant crossing the playground at break-time without stopping for an informal chat with a group of children.

Our aim is for children to be secure in themselves as individuals, enthusiastic collaborators and open communicators. We are proud of the fact that visitors to the school often comment that the children appear to be sociable, unspoiled and in some ways refreshingly unsophisticated.

MRS. JULIE ANNE GILBERT, HEAD OF INFANT SCHOOL

Infant School Curriculum Overview

Nursery and Reception – Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) BSB curriculum is based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales which we adapt to our local setting from time to time. There is a rigorous focus on children learning to communicate, read, write and understand mathematical concepts in the infant years. Learning is enhanced with engaging topic work and “themed” days which are held regularly. Within our infant school, we have four year groups.

EARLY YEARS – KEY STAGE 1

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. The curriculum for the Early Years classes is divided into seven areas of learning. Of these seven, there are three prime areas which are the key focus areas in Nursery and Reception. The prime areas are Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication and Language; and Physical Development. The remaining four areas are referred to as specific areas of learning. They are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design, and are incorporated as appropriate within our overall curriculum and according to the needs of individual children.

The BSB Juniors School - Elementary

Welcome to the British School of Bahrain’s Junior school, where eager, inquiring young minds meet academic and pastoral mentors whose goal is to make these four years of your child’s educational journey truly count.

It’s not just about minds; the whole child matters to us, growing and achieving through the important dimensions of physical education and the performing arts, as well as through nurture and high standards in the classroom.

At BSB Junior school, we ensure that children come first. Our priority is to make them feel welcome, settled, valued and part of the BSB family.

— MR. ROBERT HOWE, HEAD TEACHER OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Junior School Curriculum Overview

Years 3, 4, 5 & 6

BSB’s curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England, adapted to the needs of an international community in a British educational environment.

English is the medium of instruction, as well as a subject of study in its own right. Arabic, the mother tongue of Bahrain, is a core subject for all our students, taught in sets according to prior experience of the language, from complete beginners to fluent Arabic speakers.

Twenty-first century skills run throughout the curriculum, setting children on the right path toward their secondary education. However, Junior School is about far more than preparation for Senior School. It is a colourfully illustrated chapter of a child’s life, which can never be repeated. Junior education matters, and that is why we make it our business to get it right, for every child.
