AL RAJA SCHOOL BAHRAIN
ABOUT THE SCHOOL : An Introduction
Established in 1899, Al Raja School is one of Bahrain’s oldest and most respected educational institutions. It began when Amy Zwemer, a passionate educator, gathered young girls on her back porch to teach them reading and writing. Known initially as “The Acorn School,” it quickly grew through community support and strong ties with the American Mission Hospital, led by her husband, Samuel Zwemer.
By 1902, donations from U.S. churches enabled the construction of a dedicated school building, where students learned core subjects in the morning and crafts in the afternoon. The school evolved over the decades, becoming co-educational in the 1930s and widely recognized in the community as the American Mission School, serving students from Kindergarten to Grade 9.
In 1994, the school moved to its current purpose-built campus. By the early 2000s, it expanded to include Grades 10 through 12, with the first graduating class in 2008. The school later adopted the Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum and earned accreditation from AdvancED.
Today, Al Raja School is a dynamic, values-based institution focused on academic excellence, personal growth, and community engagement. Its long-standing motto, “Strong Students. Strong Community,” continues to shape its mission and educational philosophy.
ACADEMIC OVERVIEW
Al Raja School offers a comprehensive American curriculum from Kindergarten through Grade 12, enriched by Arabic language, Islamic Education, and Bahraini Social Studies in alignment with the Ministry of Education. The school emphasizes bilingual learning, developing fluency in both English and Arabic while fostering academic excellence and global awareness.
Core subjects include English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies, supported by programs in Computer Science, Art, Physical Education, and Religious Studies. In the high school years, students can take Advanced Placement (AP) courses, giving them access to college-level learning and potential university credit. The school also uses standardized assessments such as MAP and PSAT to track progress and readiness.
Al Raja’s Learning Inclusion Program supports students with mild to moderate learning needs, ensuring personalized strategies that promote success in mainstream classrooms. This inclusive approach reflects the school’s commitment to educational equity.
Learning extends beyond the classroom through a wide range of extracurriculars—Model United Nations, Student Council, Robotics, Debate, and community service—nurturing leadership, creativity, and social responsibility.
With a strong focus on character, communication, and critical thinking, Al Raja School prepares students to thrive academically and contribute meaningfully to their local and global communities.
