Experience The Britus International School
Academics Overview
At Britus International School, we aim to help every student develop academically, socially and emotionally. Our educational approach is firmly grounded in the belief that each child is a unique individual.
Starting in our pre-school department, we offer an American curriculum, built around California Common Core Standards (CCCS), that builds strong foundations in social skills and learning habits.
Educational standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade from kindergarten through high school.
Building on the best of existing state standards, the California Common Core State Standards provide clear and consistent learning goals to help prepare students for college, career, and life. The standards clearly demonstrate what students are expected to learn at each grade level so that every parent and teacher can understand and support their learning.
THE STANDARDS ARE AS FOLLOWS :
- Research and evidence based.
- Clear, understandable, and consistent.
- Aligned with college and career expectations.
- Based on rigorous content and the application of knowledge through higher order thinking skills.
- Built upon the strengths and lessons of current state standards.
- Informed by other top-performing countries to prepare all students for success in our global economy and society.
According to the best available evidence, the mastery of each standard is essential for success in college, career, and life in today’s global economy With students, parents, and teachers all on the same page and working together toward shared goals, we can ensure that students make progress each year and graduate from high school prepared to succeed in college, career, and life.
The standards focus on core concepts and procedures starting in the early grades, which gives teachers the time needed to teach them and gives students the time needed to master them.
The standards draw on the most important international models, as well as research and input from numerous sources, including educators from kindergarten through college, state departments of education, scholars, assessment developers, professional organizations, parents and students, and members of the public.
Because their design and content have been refined through successive drafts and numerous rounds of state feedback, the standards represent a synthesis of the best elements of standards-related work in all states and other countries to date.
For grades K-8, grade-by-grade standards exist in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. For grades 9-12, the standards are grouped into grade bands of 9-10 grade standards and 11-12 grade standards.
While the standards set grade-specific goals, they do not define how the standards should be taught or which materials should be used to support students. No set of grade-specific standards can fully reflect the great variety of abilities, needs, learning rates, and achievement levels of students in any given classroom.
Importantly, the standards provide clear signposts along the way to the goal of college and career readiness for all students.
In addition to the core subjects, Britus International school integrated the 21st century interdisciplinary themes in the daily instructional activities. The themes consist of global awareness, financial, economic, business, entrepreneurial literacy, civil literacy, health literacy, and environmental literacy.
21st Century Skills refers to a growing global movement to redefine the goals of education, to transform how learning is practiced each day, and to expand the range of measures in student achievement, all in order to meet the new demands of the 21st Century. The driving questions are: “What do students need to learn to help them succeed academically? What do students need to learn to help them succeed in their personal lives?
How are these standards applied?
From kindergarten all the way through to Grade 12 graduation, we are there to support our students through each stage of their development. BISBH offers learners high quality education within 4 distinct academic phases each clearly planned and mapped to provide students with clear pathways and progression routes to meet their individual needs.
Working through a High Scope learning approach, our nursery and KG department seek to offer students a range of learning experiences that will meet the individual needs of each and every learner through guided play and discovery learning.
Building on this our elementary and middle school programs seek to develop competence in English, Maths, Science and Arabic and promote the importance of understanding Bahrain and its rich culture and history.
As students move through to high school, they are able to opt for one of 3 learning pathways to meet their individual needs.
In addition to our American curriculum, we offer students in Grade 9 and above the opportunity to study for the International Baccalaureate or take a range of international GCSE qualifications.
This flexibility ensures that students from over 40 nations within the school can tailor learning to achieve their goals in attending university here in Bahrain, in the United States, the United Kingdom and beyond.
Preschool Academics
Starting in our pre-school department, we offer an American curriculum, built around California Common Core Standards (CCCS), that builds strong foundations in social skills and learning habits.
Working through a High Scope learning approach, our nursery and KG department seek to offer students a range of learning experiences that will meet the individual needs of each and every learner through guided play and discovery learning.
Our Pre-school curriculum recognises that every child deserves the best possible start in their life at school. Our High Scope learning approach and assessment methodology promotes an active and student-centred approach to early learning where social play, creative arts and language development are seen as key building blocks.
Specialist teachers plan and deliver engaging lessons across a range of subjects to ensure our youngest learners have a secure foundation of basic knowledge and understanding to build on as they progress up through the school.
Elementary School Academics
Elementary provision covers Grades 1- 6 and builds on the foundation learning of the Pre-school program. Students are introduced to our US curriculum model in a range of subjects centred around the California Common Core Standards.
These standards allow progress of individuals to be tracked on a regular basis with support mapped in along the way to ensure no learner is left behind. Tailored assessments provide learners and parents with clear information about areas of strength and also highlight areas that may need more attention or focus.
Middle School Academics
Students move into Middle School from Grade 7 onwards and further build on their core knowledge and skill in subjects such as English Language, Maths, Arabic, Islamic Studies, Science and Arabic Social Studies.
The work completed in this phase of the school supports students in making their first real choices about their future education pathway with learners able to continue with our US curriculum program or opt for a range of IGCSE qualifications in grades 9 and 10 before looking at progression on to our IB Diploma courses in Grade 11 and 12.
High School Academics
In High school, students increasingly specialise in the separate sciences of Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as enriching their understanding of written and spoken English and Arabic.
Students also continue to study Maths, Arabic Social Studies and ICT to ensure a breadth of knowledge that will support them in the next stages of their education or employment.
For our IGCSE students we offer a combination of courses in 11 subjects including Business, Economics and Computing as well as courses in all three sciences, maths and English.
As a Cambridge International GCSE approved centre all courses are accepted at universities here in Bahrain, the GCC region and around the globe. Students wishing to study overseas may also choose to follow an International Baccalaureate Diploma program that extends their understanding in more detail in terms of both content and context.
