Kumon Bahrain

About The Centre : An Introduction

Kumon is one of the world’s largest supplementary education providers, offering individualised maths and English programmes to help any child of any ability to progress and reach their potential. Our aim is for every child to become an independent, advanced learner with a positive attitude to study. The Kumon Method of Learning enables children to self-learn with Instructor guidance, helping students to take charge of their own learning journey and develop the confidence to strive for their goals and aspirations.

The Kumon Institute of Education was founded in 1958 in Japan, by Toru Kumon, both a parent and gifted maths teacher. He created what is now the Kumon Maths Programme for his son Takeshi, to help him improve his ability in maths. Our programmes now develop English skills, as well as maths, and are constantly evolving, learning from students and Instructors, to make them as effective as possible. Kumon still stands firm to Toru Kumon’s founding principle; to help as many children as possible excel academically and realise their potential. We can help give your child the tools for a lifelong love of learning.

Some words of inspiration from our founder Toru Kumon

“The Kumon Method is based on the conviction that it is not the child who is at fault. We have to discover each child’s potential and then provide the ‘just-right’ level of study. By doing this, not only parents and teachers, but also, more importantly, the children themselves will be surprised at their unexpected growth and develop confidence in their ability. This is what the Kumon Method is all about.”

The Kumon Method

The Kumon Method of Learning is designed to help any child of any ability progress to their maximum potential and become enthusiastic learners. Through worksheet study and Instructor guidance, students work at the ‘just-right’ level to build ability and fluency in small manageable steps. Students move up through worksheet levels only when comfortable with current work, ensuring they establish solid learning foundations and confidence in their ability.

Our study programmes are designed to help learners think for themselves and develop strong problem-solving skills, using worksheet examples to try to work out answers independently. Our Instructors observe students learning, using their patience and judgement to offer guidance only when necessary to develop each child’s ability to self-learn. Our worksheet-based study programmes have evolved over the course of 60 years, learning from our students about how best to help them succeed, build confidence and develop self-learning skills for a bright future.

Kumon is an individualised learning method that allows each student to study at the ‘just-right’ level, regardless of age or school grade. This gives all children the possibility to benefit from Kumon, whether they need to build on more basic concepts, be challenged by more complex work or somewhere in between. Through continued study at the ‘just-right’ level, students progress at their own pace, going on to study work beyond their school grade level.

Instructors determine what level students should be studying at based on ability and fluency. Students start at a comfortable level, allowing them to build confidence, concentration and pace before progressing on to higher level work. Completing work at the ‘just-right’ level enables students to become enthusiastic learners, believing in their own capability and developing a positive attitude to study.

Kumon’s study programme places great importance on self-learning, encouraging students to discover how to solve problems for themselves. It is Kumon’s belief that in equipping students to learn proactively and developing high academic ability, they will have the best chance of pursuing their short and long-term goals and aspirations.

When introducing new concepts, worksheets show example answers to help students work out the correct process independently and apply this to other similar questions to increase familiarity. Instructors do not immediately give their students answers to their questions. Instead they carefully guide students to be aware of focal points of questions and think about the information that is given in the worksheet, supporting them to solve problems by themselves. Succeeding independently in their learning gives students a great sense of accomplishment and enthusiasm for learning and the motivation to continue.

Kumon Instructors are focussed on developing the potential of each individual child. They pay careful attention to each student’s academic ability, personality and how he or she studies and solves worksheet questions. They observe their working processes without interrupting, to see how students are coping with their work and if they are engaged and confident in their activities. Based on their observations, Instructors provide effective support to ensure study at a level that is just right.

When students encounter problems that they are unable to solve, Instructors ask questions to find out how much they have understood and give hints and examples to help guide them to solve the problem by themselves. Kumon Instructors collaborate closely with parents to support each child to succeed in their studies. They acknowledge the growth of each student, without comparison to others, offering them praise and encouragement.

What is Kumon? How We Can Help You

How does Kumon differ from extra lessons or classroom learning?
Kumon offers much more than extra lessons and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

Is Kumon for struggling or gifted children?
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: “What is best for this individual child?” Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Why do Kumon students complete worksheets every day?
A small amount of daily work is set for Kumon students because completing an appropriate amount of work on a regular basis is simply more effective than longer study sessions with extended breaks – they will learn more efficiently and make faster progress as they apply what they have learned. This routine also encourages effective study habits and a positive attitude to study.

Why is Kumon work timed?
Fluency is integral to mastering a topic; this means not only being able to complete work accurately, but also quickly. Finding the answer to 8×7 is one thing, being able to recall the answer immediately is quite another. Fluency, as well as accuracy, is key to enabling your child to tackle more challenging work successfully.

How is a Kumon student taught?
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

How does Kumon work and benefit children?

At what age can students start Kumon study?
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

How do the Kumon programmes relate to a child’s age?
They don’t. A Kumon student progresses based on their current ability and not their age, although we believe that every child has unlimited potential and can ultimately tackle advanced work through well-paced and individualised instruction. We have children of similar ages studying different material and children of different ages studying the same material. Everything is dependent on the student’s needs, not on how old they are.

How will Kumon help my child with their schoolwork?
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.

How often does a Kumon student go to the study centre and for how long?
Along with daily worksheet practice at home, Kumon students regularly study with their Instructor, either in the centre and/or online. Class typically lasts for about 30 minutes per subject, or for as long as is required to complete their work for the day. This will depend on their current needs and the difficulty of the work.

How will my child’s progress be recognised?
Though the greatest reward a child can receive for their hard work is the confidence to overcome any challenge and the sense of pride for mastering advanced work, we also believe it is important to reward our students for their achievements. Kumon students can achieve numerous awards throughout their journey, to recognise reaching key milestones and studying advanced work for their age. Local awards ceremonies are also held, at which students and parents come together to celebrate the achievements of Kumon students.

The Kumon Maths Programme

Our maths programme helps children of all ages and ability levels to develop maths skills and a love of numbers. Our students are aged three and a half to older children and each one is assessed at the beginning of their Kumon journey to ensure they work at just the right level. Study is set according to ability, regardless of age or school year, making it the obvious choice for any student wanting to progress or excel in maths.

The programme goes right from the very basics of recognising numbers all the way to complex mathematical theories in small steps, building ability gradually along the way. We believe that every child has the potential to succeed in maths and our experienced Instructors support them to achieve this. Students acquire an ability to self-learn while developing understanding and fluency of each topic before moving on to another.

The Kumon Maths Programme progresses from the very basics of counting to calculus and beyond, all without the use of a calculator. Each level of the maths programme builds incrementally on the skills developed in the previous level, ensuring a solid understanding and the ability to put learning into practice. Every student will begin at a comfortable level for them. Their individual starting point, along with their expected projection rate, is established at a free assessment.

The Kumon English Programme

Our English programme aims to foster a love of reading and learning in every child. Students range from age three and a half to older children, building skills from reading and word recognition to advanced level comprehension with the ability to critique complex passages of text. Vocabulary, grammatical precision, memorisation skills and the ability to compose answers are gradually accumulated through different genres of text, familiarising students with both fiction and non-fiction, expanding their knowledge of the world and introducing them to new areas of interest.

Our Instructors support students to be able to read thoroughly, extract key information from the content and express an opinion on what they have read in a compelling way. The Kumon English Programme is not tied to any curriculum but complements learning across all subjects at school, giving students the freedom to become advanced, independent and enthusiastic learners, as well as thoughtful individuals.

The Kumon English Programme aims to develop each student’s ability to read and understand a variety of texts, and to nurture a life-long habit of reading for education and enjoyment. The English programme progresses from basic word and sentence building and culminates in critiquing advanced texts. Each student starts at their own, individually set, starting point which will be established during their free assessment

How much help am I expected to give my child at home?
Behind every successful student is a supportive parent, and nowhere is this truer than with Kumon study. Your child should be able to complete their daily homework independently as each worksheet builds on skills they will have developed on the previous level. Your child may well ask you for help, but you should ensure that, as far as possible, they complete the work by themselves.

We will work together with you to help encourage your child to achieve their potential. Parents play a key role in facilitating daily Kumon study at home by providing your child with a regular time and place to study; making sure the study area is free of distractions; marking each day’s work for your child to correct; providing plenty of praise and encouragement and maintaining good communication with your Instructor. You will be provided with answer books to help you mark your child’s work.

What if my maths or English is not very good?
As Kumon is a self-learning programme there isn’t a need to teach anything at home. Every question and every worksheet builds on the one before. Your role is, therefore, to support and encourage your child. The worksheets will do the teaching and your Instructor will guide them on their journey to becoming an independent learner. You will be provided with answer books to help you mark your child’s work.
