THE CANADIAN SCHOOL BAHRAIN

ABOUT THE SCHOOL : An Introduction

The Canadian School Bahrain (CSB) is a certified BC Offshore school offering the internationally renowned British Columbia, Canada curriculum. Located in Diyar Al Muharraq, we opened in 2019.

As a school, we are dedicated to developing students who are confident in their culture, empowering them to achieve academic excellence through the nurturing of moral values; integrity, responsibility, respect and courage.

Our goal is to provide an excellent education with high academic standards through teaching the BC Curriculum. At CSB, we teach our children to use their inquiring minds, to learn from experiences and to apply the learning to their everyday lives. We teach children “how to learn”, with the ultimate aim of educating for academic growth through an integrated curriculum by attending to the social, emotional and physical needs of each student.

We are extremely proud  of our blended curriculum where the highest standards of academic excellence held through the British Columbia, Canada curriculum in addition to the Ministry of Education of Bahrain approved Arabic language studies, Islamic studies, and Bahraini Social studies and citizenship.

ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

The British Columbia Canada curriculum (BC Curriculum) is an internationally renowned education program of the highest standard. The BC Curriculum teaches students through fostering a lifelong love of learning. This program offers a balanced, concept and inquiry-based approach that is student-centered.

The core competencies of Communication, Critical and Creative Thinking, and Personal and Social Responsibility are integrated into all learning. All subject include Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, Applied Skills, Career Education, Arabic Language, Citizenship and Islamic Studies.

How Does BC Curriculum  Differ From A Traditional Learning Curriculum ?

The BC Curriculum allows children to learn through multiple pathways that help them to make personal connections to their learning. Teachers provide an environment in the classroom in which students are engaged and invested in their learning and ultimately advocate for their own learning.

The comprehensive curriculum provides an excellent foundation for all areas of learning. CSB is focused on developing strong literacy and numeracy skills. Sound foundations of literacy and numeracy are skills that are the foundation of BC’s education system and are a key component of developing an educated citizen.

The most important goal of our program is to encourage our students to become self-confident inquisitive and enthusiastic learners.

CURRICULUM INFORMATION

Information

Our Pre-School Program is a full and enriched program alternating days in English and Arabic.

From the Nursery year, students are encouraged to role-play, practice and internalize the values of their culture and the school. Classrooms are well-equipped, giving students the opportunity to learn and express themselves in a variety of creative ways.

In addition to the basic skills, they are introduced to Physical Education and the importance of taking care of their bodies by developing good health and nutrition practices. Personal Values, Intellectual Curiosity, Confidence, and Leadership are nurtured at this early academic stage.

Through interactive activities and collaborative projects, children learn to communicate effectively, work in teams, and resolve conflicts amicably. Emphasis is placed on cultivating a lifelong love for learning, where students are encouraged to explore, question, and discover in a nurturing and supportive environment. This balance of intellectual growth and personal development lays a strong groundwork for their future educational journey.

The B.C. curriculum at the elementary level begins by exploring the individual’s own identity and family. As the students move through Grades 1 – 7 they learn about their community and the varied cultures within that community.

The Mathematics and Science programs at the elementary level in BC follow common topic areas as students move from simple concepts and processes to more complex problem solving and higher order thinking.

With English being the language of instruction, our elementary program stresses not only reading comprehension but writing in all genres.

As the students move through the British Columbia elementary school grades, social responsibility and global citizenship is taught, modeled and practiced. These are integrated into the different subjects and students are given many opportunities to practice their skills. Healthy living and healthy choices are core to not only the physical education program but the school community itself.

The Elementary program is designed to solidify a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy skills.

A thematic and integrated approach of core subjects in the Arabic and the BC classes reinforces that learning, like life, is holistic and not fragmented. In this holistic approach students have opportunity to develop their bodies through Physical Education, and their creative gifts through a variety of arts, both creative and culinary.

In elementary school there is a strong emphasis on practicing the school and cultural values of respect, responsibility, personal integrity and courage. In the classroom and on the playground they learn and practice appropriate behaviors and how to take responsibility for their actions.

Students begin to take part in competitions in Arabic and in their English classes. Public speaking, technology and leadership are integrated into their academic programs.

In grade 4, students are introduced to the one-to-one iPad program.

As our students move through the British Columbia elementary school grades, social responsibility and global citizenship are taught, modeled, and practiced. These are integrated into the different subjects and students are given many opportunities to practice their skills. Healthy living and healthy choices are core to not only the physical education program but the school community itself.

CSB considers Middle School years as the most significant developmental time in a child’s life. To give optimum opportunity for students to discover who they are in an environment that is safe and non-judgmental, CSB offers gender-segregated classes for Grades 5 through 8.

Besides Literacy and Numeracy which continue to be the core of learning, students will develop their critical and creative thinking skills through Social Studies and Science, Bahraini Citizenship, Islamic Studies and the Arabic Language.

Our goal is for students to have a significant opportunity to pursue applied skills of the latest technology, the Arts, Entrepreneurial Design and Physical Education as they work toward personal and academic excellence.

Senior years begin at Grade 9 where students, in co-ed classes transition into the BC Graduation Program – Grades 10 – 12. Grade 9 and 10 courses consist of required courses as per the BC and Bahrain Ministry of Education. Grade 11 and 12 are the years where students elect courses that meet the BC graduation requirement.

Once our Senior school is established, CSB also plans on adding Advanced Placement Courses.

We are committed to developing critical thinkers. A deep understanding of how we think enables us to capitalize on problem solving opportunities through creative and critical thinking.

Innovation comes through curiosity and the investigation of that might be with a willingness to take risks and make connections across a wide array of disciplines.

We also want our Senior students to participate in community outreach, exploring ways to interact with others making their lives better.

The required BC Career Life program will build on the leadership skills students have been learning through the elementary and middle years at CSB.

They will be challenged to internalize and personalize the values they have practiced, so that they become a part of their adult identity.

At the end of their Senior year, our students will be well prepared to face the uncertainties of their future. They will have the thinking skills, the knowledge and the exposure to some of the latest technology to become entrepreneurial and confident in their approach towards building a successful future.

The Dogwood certificate is the certificate Canadian School Bahrain students will receive from the British Columbia Ministry of Education verifying that they have successfully completed their Grade 12 requirements for BC and Bahrain.

The BC Dogwood is named after a flowering tree, which grows plentifully in British Columbia.

This certificate is based on their Student Transcript Grades, a document that lists all the courses they took in Grades 10 – 12 to complete their Graduation Program.

Students receive full BC credits for each of their Arabic, Social and Citizenship and Islamic Studies courses.

It is truly a significant Graduation Certificate that reflects an outstanding education. The certificate and BC transcript have received global recognition meeting the entrance requirements in top universities around the world.

Our graduation certificate ‘Dogwood’ is issued by the B.C. Ministry of Education and indicates that the student has successfully completed all of the required courses.

The diploma that students receive is exactly the same as diplomas Canadian students in Canada receive.

BC curriculum is one of the top curriculums within Canada. It is equivalent to a Bahraini secondary school graduation certificate.

Earning the ‘Dogwood’ diploma from Canadian School Bahrain signifies not only the completion of the BC curriculum but also represents a globally recognized standard of education. This equivalence to Bahraini secondary school certification underscores the diploma’s international value, opening doors for graduates both locally and abroad.

In future years, the plan is for students to have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) Courses offered through the American College Board.

The AP program will give our students the choice of taking college-level courses and exams and the opportunity to earn university credit and advanced placement. Offering these courses will prepare students additionally for life by broadening their intellectual horizons. While not for every student, AP will give students more choice and opportunity. Transcripts will identify advanced AP courses.
